"Balance, harmony, strength -- these are the qualities I want my paintings to express. I'm fascinated with structure, the way things work and evolve over time.

I like the bones of my drawing to show through, creating a framework for intricate patterns of negative space. The push/pull of surface and space fascinates me, and I'll often tweak a composition to include areas of interesting ambiguity. I also love finding visual echoes that enrich and unify the design.

If design is my song, color is my voice. I get caught up with the beauty and power of color and let it sweep me along as the painting emerges. When I'm working with pastel -- my current favorite -- I love building layers of rich, broken color that shimmer with light and atmosphere.

Artist Bio
Bay Area painter Nancy Roberts is a working artist, art instructor, retired architect, and former curator of the Antioch Lynn House Gallery. With many awards and honors to her credit, Nancy's work is in public and private collections across the country. She is an avid plein air painter, and has been invited to participate in several regional events including the Carmel Art Festival, Alameda's Jewel by the Bay, and the Scene on the Strait in Martinez. She is represented by Valley Art Gallery in Walnut Creek, California.
