You Are What You Project
09/11/2006 The audience is sure to love you!

Speaking in front of a group may not be the number one item on your fun list. In fact, you may find it down right intimidating. But it need not be so. Here are three ways to feel better about public speaking:

Be authentic

So many of my students think they have to be, look and perform a certain way when they speak in front of an audience. Poise helps. Confidence helps. But the most important thing you can do is be yourself.

The audience is sure to love you. If you are uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to admit it to your audience. Say something like, “ Whoa, I'm nervous today” and continue on. You can’t hide it, so admit it. It only makes you human ... like they are. Remember, no one wants you to succeed more than your audience.

Tell a story

A story is a sure way to touch the hearts of your audience. Use a story to candy coat a fact. People are more likely to remember your message.

Don’t feel badly if the presentation doesn’t go exactly as planned. Normally you are the only one who knows it. The audience certainly doesn’t. The audience only knows what you give them and they may think you’re grand.
