Many people ask me what is the difference between coaching and therapy? There is a big difference! In therapy, whether with a counselor or psychologist, people are enticed to explore the past and revisit the reasons "why" a situation is what it is.
This exploration can lead to uncovering past issues and the continued analysis of the "why". Coaching is very different because it is more actionable. A client can define the goal that they want to work on, and then the coach guides them to the solutions they need to get there.
A good coach allows the client to explore their own thoughts and encourages them to come up with some of their own suggestions as the client may already know the answer to their dilemma, but may need an outside advocate to help them see it. Also, a supportive coach will help the client role play or complete exercises to present possible outcomes.
Afterwards, a client will have a clearer mind to make the next step. Simply put, a client asks a question and a coach helps them get to the answer. As a coach, I encourage everyone to try coaching to see if it is a good fit for them. Coaching creates a different way to address an issue, but in a safe forum for a client to find various ways to solve a challenge.
