STEVEN J. MEHLMAN
Steven Mehlman, one of the two principal attorneys, has been practicing law in California for over 25 years. Mr. Mehlman’s focuses principally are in real estate and business matters, handling both transactions and civil lawsuits.
Mr. Mehlman earned his undergraduate degree with a double major in Communications and Public Policy and Political Science, from the University of California at Berkeley in 1976, with highest honors in political science, great distinction in general scholarship, and Phi Beta Kappa. He also received a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan in 1980. He was admitted to the California Bar in 1980, after receiving his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan in 1980, where he graduated cum laude.
Mr. Mehlman began his practice in San Francisco, performing complex litigation involving some of the largest cases in the country, including antitrust cases and securities fraud matters. He worked at Furth, Fahrner, Bluemle and Mason in San Francisco from 1980 through 1983, Matthew B. Weinberg Professional Corporation in San Francisco, 1983 to 1990, and Grant & Sternberg in Walnut Creek, California from 1990 to 1995.
As a managing partner at Turner & Mehlman in Walnut Creek, California from 1995 to 2002, Mr. Mehlman represented clients in transactions involving commercial and residential leases, property purchases, construction contracts, option contracts, employment contracts, business purchases and sales, as well as entity formations for partnerships, joint ventures, corporations, LLCs and LLPs. He also successfully litigated claims ranging from the limited jurisdiction court to hundreds of thousands of dollars in state and federal courts, through settlement, arbitration or trial. Litigation cases have included neighbor disputes, real estate non-disclosure, construction defects, soil movement, land use, breach of contracts, lease disputes and evictions, boundary disputes, business torts, and collections. Mr. Mehlman has also handled appellate work and represented creditors in the bankruptcy courts.
Believing in the importance of community service, Mr. Mehlman is currently active in PTA and the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce. He recently completed his term on the Contra Costa Planning Commission. He also served for 12 years as a member of the board of directors and land committee for Save Mount Diablo, a non-profit land trust, and continues to negotiate and prepare agreements for open space acquisitions. Previously, he also served as a City of Walnut Creek Planning Commission from 1989 to 1996, a legislative representative on the Las Trampas Council of PTAs, a commissioner on the Walnut Creek Transportation Commission from 1984 to 1989, and the Contra Costa Transit Authority Citizens Advisory Committee from 1985 to 1989. As a result of his activities in city and county planning, as well as his legal practice, he has developed substantial expertise in land use, from both legal and practical perspectives.
